CRISPUS ATTUCKS

EARLY LEARNING CENTER

The new Early Learning Center for the Crispus Attucks Association houses 170 underserved children from 6 weeks old through school age. The 2-story downtown building is organized around a central, naturally day-lit atrium. The atrium leads to a rooftop playground and is formally expressed on the exterior of the building via the curved metal skin that wraps an egress stair. The design responds to the surrounding context with a 2-story brick facade along Duke Street that is invigorated with a playful use of translucent polycarbonate and an inviting steel and wood entrance canopy along Boundary Avenue. The building’s HVAC system includes a sizable geothermal well field under the parking lot to the west.
